Supporting the next generation of educational managers and leaders

About IDLTM

This award is intended for experienced professionals in a language teaching context who are working in positions where their role includes operational management responsibilities for the institution and/or its staff and students. It is an award which is intended to shift the focus away from the practicalities of the classroom to other more specialised areas where teachers, Directors of Studies or school managers might want to undertake certificated professional development.

The course, which is a NEAS 'Premium Endorsed Product', is supported by the University of Queensland College, Brisbane, which also issues certification for the course.

Course aims
The aim of the International Diploma in Language Teaching Management is to enable experienced professionals in a language teaching context to apply insights and skills derived from management theory and practice to their work as LT managers.
Specifically, to enable them to:

  • extend their knowledge and awareness of relevant management principles and practices;

  • develop their management skills through the application of this knowledge and awareness to an LT context;

  • demonstrate these skills in effective practice as LT managers.

Course duration
The course lasts 8 months, with one month per module (see Syllabus page).

Course delivery mode
Teaching and learning are online: through synchronous teaching and discussion on Zoom and asynchronous discussion on Blackboard.

Our Story

IDLTM was conceived at what is now Cambridge English at Cambridge University (UK) in 2000. It was initiated by MS Christine Bundesen AM (then Director ICTE at the University of Queensland) and Professor Donald Freeman (World Learning - School for International Training USA), whose organisations delivered the IDLTM, with Cambridge ESOL providing administrative support including moderation of the course and the awarding of the diploma.

More recently the course has been run solely by ICTE-UQ, and since the interruption to course delivery in 2020-21 it has been taken over by Andy Hockley and Steve Heap, who have both been involved with the course since its inception - as curriculum developers, trainers and administrators.

The course has been run in Australia the USA, Brazil, Vietnam, China..... with around 500 graduates from around the world.

We are now pleased to be able to offer this course wholly online (previous iterations have involved periods of face to face learning). However, the syllabus modules remain  the same but with updated content.
